Philip F. Caushaj, MD, an internationally renowned
surgeon, is the chair of the Department of Surgery at the Western
Pennsylvania Hospital. In addition, he is professor and associate chair of
the Department of Surgery at Temple University School of Medicine. He
directs the Center for Pelvic Floor Diseases and the GI Surgery Motility
Laboratory. Most recently, Dr. Caushaj served as the chairman of the
Department of Surgery and the Strategic Business Unit at Bridgeport
Hospital/Yale New Haven Health, where he was also vice chair of the
Department of Surgery and a professor of Surgery at the Yale University
School of Medicine. Dr. Caushaj is past president of the New England
Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons as well as a member of over forty
prestigious national and international societies.
Dr. Caushaj received his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University
School of Medicine in Baltimore and completed a residency in surgery at
Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, New York. He also completed a
fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington,
Massachusetts. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery, American
Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, American Board of Surgery-Surgical
Critical Care and the American Board of Forensic Medicine.
Dr. Caushaj has conducted extensive research, completing over 220
publications, books and professional presentations. Much of his research
has been focused on surgical techniques to treat conditions of the
gastrointestinal system, particularly laparoscopic techniques. His
clinical interests are inflammatory bowel disease, pouch surgery,
colorectal cancer, laparoscopic surgery and gastrointestinal surgery. Dr.
Caushaj serves as a reviewer for multiple peer-reviewed journals.
Dr. Caushaj is the recipient of numerous teaching awards, such as: the
University of Massachusetts Medical School Outstanding Medical Educator
Award, the University of Massachusetts Surgical Residency Fredrick J.
McCready Teacher of the Year Award, the Yale University Edward Storer
Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award, the Bridgeport Hospital Educator of
the Year Award, the Western Pennsylvania Hospital Surgical Residency
Award, and the Temple University School of Medicine Teacher of the Year
Award. Dr. Caushaj has participated in laparoscopic training programs
throughout the world. |
