Thomas E. Read, MD, is the chief of the Division of Colon
and Rectal Surgery at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital and Associate
Professor of Surgery at Temple University School of Medicine.
Dr. Read received his medical degree from the University of California,
San Francisco, where he also completed a residency in general surgery, and
a research fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Institute. In
addition, Dr. Read completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at
the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts.
Dr. Read is a member of numerous professional societies, including the
Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, Society of Surgical Oncology, American
Collaborative Group for Inherited Colorectal Cancer and the Hereditary
Colon Cancer Association. He has served as a colorectal executive
committee member for the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, and
serves as a national medical advisory committee member for the United
Ostomy Association. Dr. Read is a fellow of the American College of
Surgeons and the American Society of the Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He was
recently named an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Colon and
Rectal Surgery.
Dr. Read’s clinical research interests have focused on the prevention
and treatment of colorectal cancer. He has published over 35 original
manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, in addition to numerous abstracts,
book chapters and invited commentaries. His work regarding the management
of patients with small benign polyps was published in the New England
Journal of Medicine, and has helped shape current recommendations for
colorectal cancer screening. Dr. Read has devoted substantial effort to
improving outcomes for patients with rectal cancer, and has had work in
this regard published in several prestigious journals. Dr. Read also
serves on the editorial board of Clinics in Colon and Rectal Surgery, and
as a reviewer for multiple peer-reviewed journals. He actively educated
surgeons in laparoscopic colorectal surgery, both nationally and
internationally.
Dr. Read has had a keen interest in education and has been the
recipient of numerous teaching awards, both as a resident and faculty
member. During his tenure at Washington University School of Medicine, the
medical students recognized his efforts with the Clinical Teacher of the
Year Award in 1999, 2000 and 2001, and the Senior Class Award Teacher of
the Year in 2000 and 2001. He also received the Everts R. Graham Resident
Teaching Award in 2000. In 2001, the Association for Surgical Education
honored him with the prestigious ASE Outstanding Teacher Award. In 2002,
he was named Educator of the Year by the surgical residents at the Western
Pennsylvania Hospital. |
